A well-treated lithium-ion battery can last for many years. These are the habits that really make a difference.
1. Avoid the extremes
Lithium-ion cells dislike sitting at 0 % and dislike staying at 100 % for long. Day to day, recharge when around 20–30 % remains and unplug once it is full.
2. Never leave it empty
A battery left flat for weeks can fall into deep discharge. The BMS then locks it for safety and it will no longer charge. If this happens, don’t force it: we can often recover it.
3. Winter storage: 40 to 60 %
If you don’t ride over the winter, store the battery indoors and dry, charged to 40–60 %. Check its level every two to three months and top it up if needed.
4. Charge at room temperature
Don’t charge a cold battery straight out of the garage in winter. Let it reach room temperature first. In summer, don’t leave it in the sun behind a window or in a car.
5. Use the original charger
An unsuitable charger can damage the cells or the BMS. If in doubt, ask us before buying a replacement charger.
6. Charge under supervision
Charge preferably during the day, on a non-flammable surface, away from combustible materials and not in an escape route.
7. Watch for warning signs
Stop using the battery immediately if it is swollen, cracked, gets unusually hot, gives off a smell, or has been dropped or exposed to water. Bring it to us for a check.
8. Have the capacity tested
A sharp drop in range does not necessarily mean the end of the battery. A capacity test shows its real condition. Often only one cell group is worn, and it can be replaced.
